About A Royal Affair

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession.”  1 Peter 2:9

You are invited to join us in providing a prom night experience, centered on God’s love, for people with diverse abilities ages 14 and older. This event will be held Friday, February 8, 2019 from 7-10 pm at the Pabst Farms YMCA in Oconomowoc, WI and at no cost to the attendees. This will be the fourth year an event like this has been available in our community and we look forward to continuing it on a bi-annual basis. The evening is full of fun and excitement including a red carpet experience for all future prom kings and queens.

ATTENDEE ARRIVAL:
Doors open at 6:30pm and the event begins at 7pm. Those who come early will be able to get checked in and be first in line to hit the red-carpet promptly at 7. When you arrive you should enter through the side door to receive the full experience for this event.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
They will be greeted and brought to the coat room to drop off their jackets. They, along with any accompanied caregiver or guest, will check-in and receive their name badge.  Each attendee will then receive either a wrist corsage or be pinned with a boutonniere.

For those who have requested a companion, or as we call them “buddies”, they will then be paired up before they hit the red carpet. Welcomed by our paparazzi, a cheering crowd but without the flash photography. At the end of the runway they can strike their best pose and we will capture the moment and will be posting a link after the event for you to grab, download and print a picture, if you so choose.

Once they have exited the red-carpet, they will enter the gym and be under a canopy of decorations to set the tone. The room will be lit by up-lights on the perimeter of the room and a DJ will be setting the mood. Attendees can either hit the dance floor, take advantage of fun prop photo booth, go for a limo ride or grab a mic and sing karaoke. Throughout the night we will follow a program which will include crowning each King and Queen with a tiara or a crown and hearing from a few guest speakers.

FOOD:
We will be serving Chick-fil-A chicken, sub sandwiches, desserts, water, and soda buffet style in the gym. It will be available at 7pm and left out until it is gone. Tables will be available to sit at to enjoy the delicious food.

BUDDIES:
Each attendee has an opportunity to either request to be paired with a buddy or bring their own. Buddies are volunteers committed to helping make this a night to remember. They will walk the red-carpet, take photos with their king or queen, eat, laugh and even dance the night away with them. A buddies sole responsibility is to serve our royal attendees and make them feel loved, honored, accepted and celebrated throughout the entire evening.

VOLUNTEERS:
This entire event is put on by volunteers. This year alone we are looking for 400 to join us and give their time to make this night happen. If you would like information on ways that you can participate and serve at this event, please click the VOLUNTEER tab on the home page. There you will find a list of different roles, their descriptions, time commitments and from there the ability sign up.

WHY:
We see this biennial event as an opportunity to partner with churches, businesses and organizations to serve and demonstrate God’s incredible love for a group of people who often get overlooked.
